![]() So the question to discuss is the following: I could imagine the situation in my head, all the gore and the slaughter, simply because the report was so detailed and rich in text, just as if I was reading a book. I proceeded to read the reports on the battle, that appeared to be VERY detailed reports on how one of my dwarves lost a leg before having his head torn apart by a crossbow bolt while the miner dwarf got impaled in the heart by a spear from a goblin and bled to death inside my dormitory, etc. It was not until I walked into the back of artorias' grave that I saw there was a female corpse with a ring on itself, and after reading the description of the ring, I deduced that Ciaran, the lord's blade, had a close relationship with artoriasĭwarf Fortress: After building my first fortress, I got invaded by goblins, needless to say, I was completely defenseless and got slaughtered quickly. But when you eventually reach the grave itself, a giant wolf appears in front of you, picks up what is supposed to be the greatsword of artorias and fights you to death, it depends on the person, but it was not until I slew sif, the grey wolf, that I realized sif was artorias' faithful companion, and that he was protecting the grave against people unworthy of adventuring into the abyss. To put it into perspective, here are 2 specific examples of my experience in both games.ĭark Souls: You keep hearing from NPCs about the grave of sir artorias and how he walked into the abyss and all his feats and stuff, and how many people try to go into the grave in search of something. The game brings the proverb "an image is worth a thousand words" into a new level. ![]() In Dark Souls, text is a rarity, and conversations are scarce and not very relevant or revealing, item descriptions are merely used to expand on the story and to partially fill some holes in the plot, but the bulk of the story is told directly with images, visual clues and face expressions or flashy effects. Much like a book, the story is told through descriptions and adjectives, rather than explicit images. Almost no images are shown and many players in the DF community recommend to stay on the vanilla ASCII graphics, to enhance your experience. When telling a story, the game uses very detailed text based reports and writings, so as to allow the reader to let his/her imagination fly. On Dwarf Fortress, the game has ASCII based graphics, some argue it is due to the complexity of the calculations of the game, etc. I chose those 2 games as example because they clearly show contrasting ways of telling a story. I do realize the story setting in dark souls is drastically different from the one in Dwarf Fortress, but I'd like to discuss the way they are shown as opposed of the way they are I haven't played both games extensively enough but just enough to understand how the story in each game is transmitted.
